This technology is called VPN

A virtual private network (VPN) is a technology that allows users to extend private networks across public networks, such as the Internet. The goal of a VPN is to enable computer networks to securely exchange data across shared public networks as if they were privately connected.  VPNs are created by establishing secure connection tunnels between computers or networks by encrypting the data that is shared between the two networks.

Benefits of VPNs

  1. Reduced IT expense. One of the main benefits of VPNs for companies is that it enables geographically disparate locations to securely communicate and share resources as if they were in the same physical location or on the same network. This allows efficient utilization of resources and consistent systems management. By combining resources and associated support staff, businesses can cut down on their IT expenses by providing the same resources to all employees regardless of what physical offices they work in.
  1. Easy and secure data access for telecommuters and travelers. By using VPNs, businesses can easily and securely extend access to remote employees, such as telecommuters and those who travel.  This has the added advantage of extending the productivity of employees by ensuring that they can securely access the corporate network and remain productive from literally anywhere in the world.
  1. Efficient integration with strategic partners and vendors. Savvy companies can even leverage VPN technology to interconnect with partner organizations that they conduct business with to seamlessly and securely share data in a manner that enhances efficiency and productivity.

Not all VPNs are created equal

Although VPNs are designed to provide similar functionality, they come in a variety of forms.  The main difference among VPN technologies that are widely used today is found in their back end structure, referred to as “protocols”.  The most common VPN protocols include:

  • Transport Layer Security SSL/TLS,
  • Internet Protocol Security (IPsec),
  • Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP),
  • Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), and
  • Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP), among others.

Each protocol offers a different set of features and benefits to meet your unique needs.  In order to make the right choice in selecting the best VPN technology and deployment strategies, companies need to work with knowledgeable and experienced providers that have their best interests in mind.
